Authentic K-II Meters: How to Tell a Genuine K2 From a Counterfeit
If you have spent any time around paranormal investigation equipment, chances are you have seen a K-II EMF Meter. The K-II has become one of the most recognizable tools in ghost hunting, and for good reason: its simple five-light design makes changes in electromagnetic fields easy to see during an investigation.
But there is an important problem for investigators and collectors today: authentic K-II meters are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
The original K-II meter is no longer being manufactured, which has made genuine K-II meters a scarce piece of paranormal investigation equipment. Unfortunately, the popularity of the K-II has also led to counterfeit versions appearing on the market.
At first glance, a fake K2 can look remarkably similar to the real thing. So how can you tell the difference?
The K-II Meter Is No Longer Being Manufactured
Authentic K-II meters were manufactured by K-II Enterprises in Camillus, New York. Because production has stopped, the supply of genuine K-II meters is limited to the units that are already out in the world.
That scarcity makes it more important than ever to know what you are buying.
There are counterfeit K2-style meters available that may look convincing in photographs or online listings. Some even copy markings associated with the original K-II. Fortunately, there are several clues you can look for.
1. Examine the Label
One of the easiest places to start is the face label.
Authentic K-II meters feature a UV-reactive label and the updated face label has several distinctive characteristics. The genuine label has a black banner that reaches all the way to the edges of the label, with white lettering reading “K-II EMF METER” underneath the numerical milligauss (mG) range.
The authentic color sequence is:
Teal
Bright green
Yellow
Bright orange
Pink
The areas surrounding the color range and behind the black banner feature a distinctive black-and-white pinstripe pattern.
Counterfeit meters often use a different-looking label. Some fraudulent versions have an older-style label marked “KII USA.” The banner on these labels is generally white with black lettering and does not extend to the edges of the label. The colors also tend to be darker, and the areas beside the color range are usually plain white or light gray rather than the black-and-white pinstripe pattern.
But There's an Important Exception
There is a detail that can cause confusion when identifying older authentic K-II meters.
Some genuine older K-II meters are out there with a non-UV-reactive label.
That does not automatically mean the meter is counterfeit.
If you encounter an older K-II with a label that doesn't have the UV-reactive characteristics of the later authentic labels, check the circuit board. Some older genuine K-II meters have a non-UV label while the circuit board inside the meter identifies K-II Enterprises.
In other words, don't automatically write off an older meter simply because its face label doesn't match the newer UV-reactive label.
The label is one clue—but it should not be the only clue you use when determining authenticity.
2. Look at the Back of the Meter
Turn the meter over. An authentic K-II should have:
“MADE IN USA K-II ENTERPRISES CAMILLUS, NY”
on the back.
However, this is another area where counterfeiters have attempted to copy the genuine markings. Some fraudulent K2 meters have had the K-II Enterprises information stamped onto them, while others may have a blank back or a logo instead.
So while the back marking is an important clue, it shouldn't be considered proof of authenticity by itself.
When evaluating a K-II, look at the entire meter, including the label, construction, markings, circuit board and performance.
3. Pay Attention to the Texture
Here's a surprisingly simple test: pick it up.
Authentic K-II meters have a slightly textured surface that gives the casing an almost matte appearance.
Counterfeit versions are typically smoother and glossier.
This may seem like a minor difference, but once you've handled an authentic K-II, the distinction can become much easier to recognize.
The genuine meter also tends to feel heavier and sturdier in your hand.
4. Check the Overall Build Quality
The differences aren't just cosmetic.
Authentic K-II meters were built to be durable. It isn't unusual for a genuine K-II to continue working after many years of use—including units that have been in service for a decade or more.
Counterfeit meters tend to use cheaper construction and materials. One common problem is the power button, which can break easily. Fake units may also be more susceptible to general wear and tear and can stop functioning after a relatively short period of use.
When you have the opportunity to physically compare two meters, the difference can be surprisingly obvious.
The genuine K-II feels like a quality piece of equipment.
5. Let the Meter's Performance Tell You Something
The final test is how the meter actually performs.
Authentic K-II meters are calibrated to respond to changes in electromagnetic fields and should provide consistent, reliable readings.
Counterfeit versions can behave differently. They may produce erratic readings or fail to respond consistently to electromagnetic fields.
Some counterfeit K2-style meters also have other noticeable characteristics, including a distracting clicking sound when they are switched on or indicator lights that are excessively bright.
For paranormal investigators, those details matter. Equipment should help you investigate—not become a distraction during an investigation.
A Quick Authentic K-II Checklist
If you're looking at a K-II meter and want to determine whether it is genuine, consider all of these clues together:
Face Label
Does it have the characteristics of the authentic updated label?
Is the black banner extended to the edges?
Does it say “K-II EMF METER”?
Are the colors consistent with an authentic K-II?
Is there black-and-white pinstriping around the label?
Is the label UV reactive?
Remember: Some older genuine K-II meters may have a non-UV label, so this characteristic alone does not prove a meter is fake.
Back of Meter
Does it say “MADE IN USA K-II ENTERPRISES CAMILLUS, NY”?
Does the overall construction and appearance of the back look consistent with an authentic meter?
Circuit Board
If you have access to the inside of an older K-II, look for K-II Enterprises on the circuit board.
An older genuine meter with a non-UV label may still have a K-II Enterprises circuit board.
Construction
Does the casing have a slightly textured, almost matte finish?
Does it feel heavy and sturdy?
Does the button feel durable?
Performance
Does the meter respond consistently?
Are the lights behaving normally?
Is there an unusual clicking sound?
Are the lights excessively bright or distracting?
No single characteristic should necessarily be considered in isolation. The more authentic characteristics you find, the stronger the case that you're looking at a genuine K-II.
Why Authentic K-II Meters Matter
The K-II has earned its place in paranormal investigation history. Its straightforward design made it easy for investigators to monitor electromagnetic field changes without complicated displays or menus.
Today, however, investigators have another consideration: provenance and authenticity.
With original K-II meters no longer being manufactured, genuine units are becoming harder to find. That means investigators looking for an authentic K-II need to be particularly careful when purchasing one.
A meter that looks like a K-II isn't necessarily a K-II.
And that's especially important if you're buying an older unit, purchasing from a private seller, or paying a premium because the seller claims the meter is an original.
Don't Let a Look-Alike Fool You
The K-II may have a simple design, but identifying a genuine one isn't always as simple.
Look beyond the color-changing lights. Examine the label. Check the back. Feel the texture and weight. Pay attention to the build quality and how the meter operates. And if you're dealing with an older K-II that has a non-UV label, don't immediately assume it's counterfeit—the circuit board may provide another important clue.
As authentic K-II meters become scarcer, knowing these differences can help investigators avoid counterfeit equipment and make more informed decisions when adding one of these iconic meters to their collection.
